Down the Rabbit Hole

TV Review: Once Upon A Time in Wonderland

Once Upon A Time in Wonderland’s pilot episode actually has a title, that isn’t “pilot”; Down the Rabbit Hole.

The show opens in Victorian England, with Alice as a little girl, excitedly returning from Wonderland. She rushes home, where she finds out that she’s been missing for a long time, and her father feared that she was dead.

Present day, Storybrooke, we meet the Knave of Hearts. The White Rabbit appears to him, telling him that Alice needs his help. For some reason this scene seemed out of place, I’m not sure why we had to be in a different time period for this. It’s as if they set it in modern day Storybrooke to make sure we really understood this was a spin off series of Once Upon A Time. Because it’s not like the title let us know that, or anything.

As a result of her many disappearances, and her stories of Wonderland, now a young lady, Alice is institutionalized. We travel between her memories of Wonderland, and what is currently happening with her at the institution. Then she’s ‘rescued’ by the Knave of Hearts, and the White Rabbit returns them to Wonderland where their adventure starts. I’ll leave the recap off there, because I don’t want to reveal any spoilers.

The acting was solid, decent effects (but not as good as they should be), and the show was entertaining. But I think I’m on the fence for this one, I’ll give it a few more episodes to see if I will stick with it.

If you didn’t catch the episode premiere, it’s currently streaming on Hulu, so go check it out!

Once Upon A Time in Wonderland airs on ABC, Thursdays at 8/7c
