A Few Thoughts on the DC Universe Movies

The one main thing that has long bothered me about most of the DC Universe movies is that they seem rushed, they didn’t take time to properly explore each hero and their stories.

Batman v Superman is a good example of what I’m talking about, they made it a mess because they wanted to be like, “Here is Wonder Woman, and a glimpse of other Justice League characters!”, it was out of place and forced. They should have just stuck to the Batman v Superman story.

My next biggest problem with the DC Universe is that most of the characters seem to have no chemistry when onscreen together. Compare all that to what Marvel did, and how their characters feel, and you see how much DC is lacking in that department.

A lot of the problems I have seem to come down to, probably not surprisingly,  bad casting, bad writing, and bad directing.

That being said, I did enjoy some of the movies. For example, Man of Steel was well done, IMO. Maybe a little over the top at times, but I still liked it. I also very much enjoyed Shazam, and can’t think of any big complaints off the top of my head with that one.

Wonder Woman was probably one of the best they made, except I always felt there was something off about the last part of the movie. That final act, the story with Ares, seemed somehow out of place and rushed. Personally, I would have liked more time on Themyscira.

Aquaman had some issues. Personally I like Jason Momoa as the main character, but Amber Heard was seriously miscast. The story seemed to go weirdly between nicely setting stuff up, being dull, then becoming WAY too much. Yet, I did like it enough to hope they would make another, and do better with the second one.

I don’t even want to talk about Justice League, but I will. I didn’t think it would be a good movie, to be honest, no matter who was directing or writing it. They didn’t have the right build up to the movie, the scene was not clearly set to make a Justice League movie, and it should not have been done at that time. Period.

Suicide Squad wasn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. It has it’s enjoyable moments, but suffers from a lot of the same things other DC movies do. I love some of the actors, but I feel they may not have been right for some of those roles. The story, it seemed to be off a bit, and not memorable (I am currently trying to remember what it was about… and I can’t…).

Birds of Prey, well, I haven’t seen it and have no desire to. If it’s ever streaming on a service I use I’ll probably check it out, but until then, hard pass.

Not gonna lie, I didn’t rewatch them before writing this, which probably doesn’t seem fair. But, much of what they have produced has very little rewatch value to me. I just don’t feel the same love and passion from those movies as I do with the MCU (which has some questionable stuff too). I just feel a connection with the MCU characters, that I don’t feel with DC movie universe characters. Is it just me?
